December 14: Annual General Meeting (AGM)

JETAA Ottawa held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on December 14, 2019! As a volunteer-based registered not-for-profit organisation, JETAA Ottawa held its annual meeting looking for new and excited individuals to help run the chapter. The event was very well-attended with about 20 JETAA members coming out to vote for the 2020 Executive Committee!

Thank you to everyone who attended the AGM! The Executive Committee page will be updated in the new year. We look forward to seeing you in 2020!

The AGM may be over, but you can reach out if you want to help!
Any willingness to help will be accommodated.

NOVEMBER 29: JETAA 日本語だけディナー // JETAA NIHONGO DAKE DINNER

Our second Nihongo Dake (Japanese Only) Dinner of the year was a resounding success! Many people of all Japanese levels, both JETAA members and non-members, joined the group to try and speak only Japanese throughout the event!

OCTOBER 19: WELCOME BACK SOCIAL FOR RETURNING JETS

The Welcome Back Social was a fun get-together for newly returned or new-to-Ottawa JETs and other alumni! Some good food and conversations were had in good company! The dinner was followed by an amazing karaoke session filled with theatrics and emotions from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.

OCTOBER 8: CARREER FAIR AND WELCOME BACK RECEPTION

This year once again, JETAA Ottawa co-hosted a Career Fair with the Embassy of Japan. The event was open exclusively to JET and MEXT alumni. The fair was held on Tuesday, October 8 and was followed by the official Welcome Back Reception. 

Guests were invited to listen to presentations by the participating companies and visit their booths during the afternoon. It provided a good opportunity for networking and learning more about jobs available in Ottawa. RSVP was required as the event was open exclusively to JET and MEXT alumni.

The Career Fair was followed by a Welcome Back and Networking Reception held at H.E. Ambassador Kimihiro Ishikane. Returning JETs, JET and MEXT alumni, Representatives from the Career Fair Participating Companies, government officials and supporters of the JET Programme attended the reception which also presented great networking opportunities. Delicious food and drinks were served. RSVP was required – up to 40 on a first-come-first-serve basis, with priority given to Career Fair Attendees.

October 6: Resume & Job Hunting Workshop

JET returnees and alumni gathered together for a Resume & Job Hunting Workshop run by Jillian, Nayoro-shi ALT from 2007-2008. It was a very informative session, especially ahead of the Career Fair organised by JETAA in collaboration with the Embassy of Japan coming up on October 8. Thank you to everyone who participated and good luck!

Jillian has applied to thousands of jobs and has successfully been hired at the University of Calgary, Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology, the Canadian Museum of Nature, CIHR and most recently employed by the University of Ottawa. September 14: JETAA Toronto Yukata Summer Sunset Cruise

In celebration of a historic year and the new Reiwa era, JETAA Toronto held a Yukata Summer Sunset Cruise in Toronto Harbour. 

Members of the JETAA Ottawa Chapter carpooled to the event and spent the night reminiscing about their time in Japan and mingling with alumni from different chapters.

August 16: Arigatsuri

A night of fun to thank all booths, performers and volunteers who helped making Natsu Matsuri a success! RSVP was done through Eventbrite and JETAA Ottawa provided appetizers.


July 21: Natsu Matsuri 2019

JETAA Ottawa in collaboration with the Embassy of Japan has held the 15th annual Natsu Matsuri at Marion Dewar Plaza on July 21, 2019!

Thank you to all participating organisations and performers, and to everyone who attended this year’s Natsu Matsuri! See you next year!


March 22: JETAA 日本語だけディナー NIHONGO DAKE DINNER

Thank you to everyone who joined JETAA Ottawa for our first Nihongo Dake (Japanese Only) Dinner, where we got together, enjoyed a meal, and did our best to only speak Japanese. All levels were welcome, from beginner to native.

We held the dinner at Ottawa’s premier izakaya: Shingen.

As space was limited at Shingen and we’d like to know how many people at each Japanese ability level are attending, an RSVP through our sign-up form was required.


FEBRUARY 23: BOARD GAME AFTERNOON AT LOFT & KARAOKE NIJIKAI

Where: The Loft Board Game Lounge (2nd Floor, 14 Waller St, Ottawa, ON K1N 9C4)
When: 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM
We took a break for dinner and met up at for another round of shenanigans. We had a big room booked for THREE HOURS!
Where: Popstar Karaoke (382 Rideau)
When: 7:00 – 10:00

We cozied up over board games at The Loft Board Game Lounge. With hundreds of games to choose from, including the very latest releases.

The Loft also offered drinks and food, so participants didn’t have to worry that we were playing through lunch.

This event is limited to JET alumni and plus-ones. 


January 26: Skating Party and Dinner

On a rare sunny and beautiful January day, 12 JET Alumni and friends enjoyed skating on the Rideau Canal and eating Beaver Tails while reminiscing about their time in Japan. Following this we ate west coast-style Japanese food at “J: Unique Kitchen,” a new Japanese Restaurant in Ottawa, and then spent 3 throat-destroying hours singing Karaoke at PopStar Karoke! 超楽しかった!
