JETs recently back from Japan or who have been back for a while and are looking for a new job or exploring options joined JETAA Ottawa’s Resume and Job Hunting Workshop. Thank you to everyone who attended!
Jillian Steele (Nayoro-shi ALT, 2007-2008) led the event. Jillian has applied to thousands of jobs and has successfully been hired at the University of Calgary, Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology, the Canadian Museum of Nature, CIHR and most recently employed by the University of Ottawa.

OCTOBER 4: SENPAI-KOHAI JET WELCOME BACK SOCIAL
Returnees and alumni joined JETAA Ottawa’s virtual event, Senpai-Kohai welcome back social on October 4. Returning JET participants had the chance to talk to local JET alumni, ask about re-transitioning to Canadian life, and chat about their experience.

JULY 31: Summer Trivia Night
JETAA Ottawa hosted its second Trivia Night! The theme was SUMMER!
Participants joined and tested their knowledge in many subjects such as music, Pokemon, 90s nostalgia, summer blockbusters, Japanese summer and more! Prizes were given out to the top 3 winning teams!
Teams were composed of up to 3 people and participants without a team were matched to existing groups!

July 26: Virtual Book Club: “Kitchen” by Yoshimoto Banana
JETAA Ottawa hosted its 2nd Virtual Book Club via Zoom.
Participant read and discussed Yoshimoto Banana’s highly acclaimed novella “Kitchen”.

JUNE 19: TRIVIA NIGHT
JETAA Ottawa hosted its first Trivia Night! JET alumni and friends came to test your knowledge in a variety of fields with fun quizzes! The top 3 scorers had the chance to win one of our awesome prizes!

MAY 9: VIRTUAL BOOK CLUB: HARUKI MURAKAMI – KAFKA ON THE SHORE
JETAA Ottawa hosted its first ever virtual book club!
This physical distancing-friendly event happened after the participants read Haruki Murakami’s classic novel “Kafka on the Shore”.The book could be read in any language or format, but the discussions was held in English.
The book club was hosted on Zoom and led by veteran book-club alumnus and JETAA Ottawa Vice-President Brandon Wallace (Hyogo 2011-2013). This event was open to all JET alumni as well as friends and family of alumni!

MARCH 6: LIVE, WORK, STUDY IN JAPAN!
Guests of the info session enjoyed Japanese food and drink while learning more about the JET Programme directly from members of the alumni association! Guests seemed had many questions and learned a lot through the presentations and conversations with former participants. Thank you to everyone who joined us for the event!
Alumni from the MEXT Scholarship Program and Working Holiday Visa were also present and official from the programs gave presentations.

FEBRUARY 8: Board Game Day and Karaoke Night
***Limited to JET alumni and plus-ones.***
Many JET alumni came out and escaped the cold with us over board games at The Loft.
We then took a break for dinner and met up at Popstar Karaoke at 7 PM for another round of shenanigans. The coldest day of the year was no match for the enthusiasm of the attendees!

JANUARY 8: Luncheon at Ambassador Kawamura’s Residence
Five members of the executive committee attended an enjoyable luncheon at Ambassador Kawamura’s residence on January 8, 2020 to discuss Canada-Japan relations. This was the second meeting of the new Ambassador of Japan to Canada with members of JETAA Ottawa.
